Introduction

Sarawak’s national parks are managed by Sarawak Forestry. This arm of the government is tasked to protect and manage Sarawak’s vast rainforest resources. Governed by several ordinances and staffed with highly skilled professionals, Sarawak Forestry is responsible for the State’s rainforest management and conservation efforts, biodiversity protection, rehabilitation and reforestation efforts, scientific research, enforcement of legislative laws and several other important functions.

Sarawak National Parks

Sarawak prides itself in having one of the largest and most extensive conservatory area in Malaysia. The State’s protected area network comprises of 18 national parks, 5 nature reserves and 4 wildlife sanctuaries which cover a total area of 512,387.47 hectares.

15 Totally Protected Areas (TPA’s) are open to the general public. The wildlife sanctuaries, on the other hand, are closed. Sarawak engages in responsible and sustainable management of its natural assets, and biodiversity conservation efforts are rigorous.

Entry Fees

Visitors to all national parks in Sarawak are required to pay a nominal entry fee. Passes are also available for multiple entries or group entries. For day trips, entry permits can be obtained and fees payable upon arrival.

Accommodation

The National Parks Booking Office, located next to the Kuching Visitors’ Information Centre (located in the Sarawak Tourism Complex), is responsible for all accommodation bookings in the Kuching area. For national parks located in the northern parts of the State (Niah, Lambir Hills, Loagan Bunut, Similajau), the office is located in the city of Miri. Alternatively, online booking is also available (but is limited to only several national parks). The best bet is to contact the National Parks Booking Office directly.
